Dr Uncapher to co-chair a conference on Kids and Tech for the National Academy of Sciences

The National Academy of Sciences, along with the Institute of Digital Media and Child Development, are launching a global convening of researchers, pediatricians, child psychologists, and neuroscientists who are investigating the impact of technology and media use on childrens' brains and behavior. 

IAN's Dr Uncapher is a co-organizer and will chair the working group day of the conference.

White papers will be published in an upcoming issue of Pediatrics, and select primary papers and reviews will be published in upcoming issues of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Dr Uncapher helps launch the Science of Learning report in Washington, D.C. with Deans for Impact

Dr Uncapher (Assistant Professor of Neurology, UCSF) joins Ben Riley (ED of Deans for Impact), Dr Dan Willingham (Professor of Psychology, U of Virginia) and dean Greg Anderson (Temple University) for the national launch of the Science of Learning report from Deans for Impact at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. 

The report summarizes insights from the Science of Learning into practical implications for teaching and learning in the classroom.

Father of the Internet, Vint Cerf, endorses the Kids and Tech conference

One of the fathers of the Internet, Vint Cerf (VP of Google), filmed his support of the upcoming conference on Children and Tech, sponsored by the National Academy of Sciences, and the Institute of Digital Media and Child Development. IAN's Dr Uncapher is an organizer and co-chair of the conference, and is a founding board member of the Institute of Digital Media and Child Development. 

The conference will convene world-leading researchers, pediatricians, child psychologists, and neuroscientists that are investigating the impact of technology/media use on childrens' brains and behavior.

Dr Uncapher supported the new report by nonprofit Deans for Impact that translates the latest research on the science of learning for pre-service and in-service teacher training:

What do we know about how students learn, and what does that knowledge mean for how we teach?
That’s what The Science of Learning, a new publication from Deans for Impact, seeks to answer. The Science of Learning summarizes the existing research from cognitive science related to how students learn, and connects this research to its practical implications for teaching and learning. Building off many efforts that came before it and reflecting the general consensus of the scientific community, The Science of Learning is intended to serve as a resource to teacher-educators, new teachers, and anyone in the education profession who is interested our best scientific understanding of how learning takes place.

Dr Uncapher and colleagues Dr Michael Rugg and Dr Jeff Johnson contribute a chapter discussing what neuroimaging research has revealed about the nature of learning and memory in the brain. The textbook, Cognitive Neuroscience of Memory, is a high-level resource for undergraduate and graduate courses on the latest insights on how the brain supports learning and memory.
